Summery of Programme

Hi,

I didn't do the activity for the wiki as I was using a wiki for a uni assessment.
I enjoyed using the wiki. It was a great way to communicate with others for your group assignment. Wikis allowed you to post work at your leisure for others to view. It allowed you to comment on the work of others in your group and edit your work. The wiki I used had a chat screen. When we meet online as a group to discuss our assessment, the wiki was very slow to respond. All members of our group had this problem.

Communication is more than just verbal and written, it is also the non verbal such as body language and tone of voice. without the body language and voice tone, it is so easy to take what is written in a chat session or senr via email the wrong way. Nor being able to respond to body language and tone of voice is a major disadvantage for online communication.

Social Networking

Hi,

A question was asked, how can libraries uses social networking? My thought on the question are below.

I feel a library's presence on social networking sites, would be benefitial as a way to advertsing the library to a demographic that doesn't use library services frequently.

The libraries would need to promote the segments of their collections that meet the needs of this demographic such as CD and DVD collections, resources that assist with HSC and University studies, as well as book reviews from the young adult and adult fiction collections that would appeal to teenagers and young adults.

Events that target this demographic could also be promoted through My Space and Face Book.

Online Applications and Tools

Hi,

I have not visited my blog or continued with this programme for a good 6 weeks. The reason being that I was completing assessments for my postgraduate degree and I don't find the time to do the exercisies for this progamme at work and my spare time at home has been devoted to university assessments.

One of the assessments at Uni involoved the distance edcation students working together as a group. We did this using a wiki set up on the CSU interact website. This work very well until it came time to collate our work. We had a few version of our management plan attached to the wiki that, we had to be extra careful that we were working on the latest version.

Maybe sites like google docs could help overcome this problem.

I have posted to google docs aome of my family history research. I am going to post the link below to see if will work on my blog.

Mashups

Hi, I've been playing with mashups. I will try uploading 2 from my computer.

They could be use on library websites to create a calender of events. Many craft projects could be created using mashups and put on websites. Could be a good way to promote children's events.

Podcasts

Hi,

I have been using Podcasts recently while studying for my postgraduate degree. WE have been directed to the State library of Victoria to listen to podcasts on their site and just recently my lecturer expressed his thoughts on a subject we are studying via podcast.

I enjoy listening to podcasts when receiving information as sometimes you can take in the content better when it is not in written form.

Answer Boards

Hi,
When I was exploring the answer board links in week 7, I stumble across a question I could answer. Here is the link.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_is_a_platypus_a_mammal&updated=1&waNoAnsSet=1&ftr=1

I found I answered it because I knew the answer and I could quickly type a reply without having to research. I did not have to join to answer the question so that was another incentive.

Library Thing

Hi,

I enjoyed using the library thing and can't wait to use it on my home computer. I started the account on another computer and when it came time to add my books (and I have many), I couldn't remember what they were. A problem I did find when searching for the titles I did remember is that the covers are different from what I found searching through Amazon by the search screen. SO I would like to add my collect my ISBN, so I can create an exact copy of my physical library virtually.

Here is the link.

I had fun starting this account. A hobby of mine is family history, and there are many resources that I have added to faviourites. This site would be usefully for accessing these sites from any computer.

wiki 2

Hi,

I am doing a postgraduate degree and have just received information about my second assessment. I, as well as the majority of students are distance eduacation student and we have to do this assessment as a group using a wiki. It will be interesting putting the wiki to a practical application.

Wiki

Hi,

I have visited the wiki and thought they were interesting. They all seem to be in their beginning stages. I enjoyed the book reviews by library patrons. I think this is a simple idea that most libraries could start immediately.

I have not explored the pbwiki created for us yet but I am looking forward to playing with this programme.

RSS feeds

Hi,

I am computer literate but I do not spend all my time in front of a computer so I can't imagine using RSS feeds all that often. But I have notice that the latest version of explorer allows you to add RSS feeds straight to your computer without going to a special RSS programme. When I find time, I am going to explore this further. I think this would be more convenient than a specialised RSS feed site.

I have added about 7 RSS feeds to my blogline site and now I am going to attempt adding a feed to this blog

Well lets see if this works.

I think using RSS feeds to keep up to date with sites that are important to libraries would be a good use. An example of such a site is ABS.

Flicker

Hi,

This is a photo ( or it may turn into a few, as there are many beautiful photos) of where I live. Enjoy.
The first photo show what the weather has been like recently, the second illustrates the usual weather patterns we experience.
I have to say that it is not easy to determine whether the photographer would like these photos to be used by the general public. The symbols illustrating this are easy to understand but very hard to locate on the flickr website.

Downfall of instant notification

Technology seems to be changing the way we soicalised. For example my son has just turned 16 and so we were trying to organise a party. He enjoys music and his original idea was to hire a small hall and get his friend's band to play at the party to about 20 invited guests. I had to veto this idea due to the fact that technology allows instant notification of party details and this allows gatecrashers to be almost a certainly.

The next idea was to have a party at my parents' place on a Saturday evening. There is a large room down stairs where they can play music and an inground pool for swimming. This idea was veto for the exact same reason above.

24 years ago this kind of party would of and did take place and without the fear of gatecrashers arriving and causing damaged.

The immediacy of instant notification allows individuals to act on impulse and the results of this impulsive behaviour is quickly changing the way we celebrate significant milestones in our lives.

Week 2

Hi,

The technology in learning 2.0 is not unfamilar to me as I used the information from the originial programme in an university assignment last semester. As I was more concern with completing my assignments, I did not have time to play with the new technology, so I am looking forward to doing this while completing this programme.

I can't imagine myself being a blog user as I prefer doing other things than sitting at a computer all day but my 16 year old son would have a different opinion. This difference in opinion can be contribute to the difference between generation X and Y.
